Eight Things to do after a loved one passes away

Documents Needed for Funeral Planning

  •         Name and Contact information for immediate family/close friends

  •         Instructions for burial arrangements including:

  •         Contact for nearest Veteran Administration facility (if a Veteran). 

  •         Call 1-800-827-1000.  Ask about special arrangements.

  •         Obituary Information

  •         Name and contact of Funeral home

  •         Name and contact for Headstone

  •        Name and contact for Burial Site/Plot

  •        Contact family member/friends to assist with pallbearing, repast, etc



Documents Needed for Administrative Purposes

  •            If a Veteran, Honorable discharge papers for a veteran and/or VA claim number AND

  •            Death certificates (At least 20. Keep one on file in a safe area)

  •             Social Security card (for bequeathed, spouse and children)

  •             Marriage certificate

  •             Birth certificate

  •             Birth certificates for any children

  •             Insurance policies (auto, life, health, dental, etc)

  •             Deeds and titles to property

  •             Automobile title and registration paper

  •            Investment account statements, such as:

    • Stock certificates,

    • CDs, bonds,

    • 401k,

    • mutual funds,

    • pensions,

    • IRAs, etc.)

  •             Last bank statement

  •             Last two years of income tax forms and W-2 forms

  •             Last mortgage statement

  •             Last loan statements (auto, personal, etc.)

  •             Last credit card statement

  •             Utility bills (electric, gas, water, trash, alarm system, etc)
